Things To Love About the McGinley Memorial Public Library




McGinley Memorial Library Is McGregor’s Place to Go For Research & Recreation



While the McGinley Memorial Public Library in McGregor, Texas, doesn't have the resources that the Waco-McLennan County Public Library has, it does have many qualities that endear it to McGregor residents:

Located at 317 South Main Street  (SH 317), the McGregor Library can be found in the same block as the McGregor Chamber of Commerce and the McGregor Mirror.

Open During the Work Day and on Tuesday until 7:
 
Even though the Library is open only 20 hours a week, Librarian Mary Whitley truly strives to meet patrons' needs:
  • Sunday, Monday, and Saturday: Closed
  • Tuesday: 2--7 P.M.
  • Wednesday: 8:30 A.M.--1:30 P.M.
  • Thursday: 12--5 P.M.
  • Friday : 8:30 A.M.--1:30 P.M.

Fun Story Times for Toddlers and Preschoolers:

 Friend of the Library, Lou Denn, leads a lively story time for toddlers and preschoolers on Wednesday morning at 9:30 A.M., and on Thursday afternoon at 4 P.M. Librarian Mary Whitley introduces these pre-readers to the world of books. A large selection of children's and juvenile fiction and non-fiction caters to local children's needs.

Personal Computers  as well as a WI-FI Connection: 

Patrons have access to six first come, first serve PCs. The Library has reserved two of these computers for adult users.

Photocopier:
 
Black and white copies cost 25 cents per page, and color copies cost $1.00 per page.

Audiobooks, CDs and DVDs as well as VHS Cassettes:

Patrons have a choice of a wide selection of classical, family-oriented audio-books and movies. 

Ellison Die Cut Machine:
 
A letter maker provides patrons with an easy, in-expensive way to create bulletin boards and posters.

Used Books for Sale:

Hard cover books cost $2.00, and paperbacks cost $1.00. Proceeds benefit the McGinley Memorial Public Library

Computerized, In-house Card Catalog:
 
Patrons can easily search the in-house, computerized catalog for author, title, and subject and then quickly find items on the shelves by using the Dewey Decimal cataloging system*:
  • 000--Generalities: General reference and computer science
  • 100--Philosophy, including logic and ethics, and psychology, including parapsychology
  • 200--Religion, including science and religion, Greek and Roman religion, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, and other religions
  • 300--Social sciences: sociology, anthropology, statistics, political science (civics), economics, law, government, insurance, transportation, and etiquette
  • 400--Language: Dictionaries, linguistics, etymology (the history of words), English grammar, foreign languages
  • 500--Natural science and math: biology, including botany and zoology, chemistry, physics, geology (earth science), and mathematics
  • 600--Applied science and Technology: Invention and patents, medicine, health, the military, engineering, animal husbandry, agriculture, housekeeping, shorthand, and accounting
  • 700--The Arts:  Museums, architecture, landscaping, sculpture, drawing, painting, interior decoration, photograph, music, interior games, sports, fishing, and hunting
  • 800--Literature and rhetoric: Literature history, literary criticism, poetry, and drama
  • 900--Geography and history: Geography and travel and history

Patrons can find Fiction entries on the shelves by looking for the first three letters of the author's name on the book's spine; for example, Fiction/Ste,  or  Large Print/Ste, for Danielle Steel.  A large selection of popular large-print fiction is available.

An Old-Fashioned Reference Shelf:

McGinley Library's small reference section is still a place researchers can find a hard-copy Encyclopaedia Britannica (1977 and 1982 editions) and a World Book Encyclopedia (2008).  Patrons, of course, can also access the current edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica on the Web at http://www.britannica.com as well as those encyclopedias available through http://www.encyclopedia.com and reference sources like Infoplease at http://www.infoplease.com

Unique Genealogical Resources:
 
Genealogical sources available only to the McGregor, Texas, Library include copies of the McGregor High School yearbook.  Patrons will need to access the Waco-McLennan County Library's Web page and have a current library card with a  password to use subscription-database genealogical resources like Heritage Quest online.

McGregor area residents who also hold a Waco-McLennan County Public Library card may access subscription databases Online from any location by using that library card number and a password available through the Waco-McLennan County Library's link to TexServe, which is available free-of-charge for all Texas libraries.  Popular Online databases include Gale Powersearch, Gale Virtual Reference Library, Heritage Quest, Ancestry (Library Edition), Fold3, Masterfile, Overdrive, and Student Resources in Context.  Additional Online books are available through Net Library and EBSCO Books.

Spanish-speaking patrons may view Economia y Negocias, Fuente Academica, Medic Latina, and Medline Plus (in Spanish) databases by entering their Waco-McLennan County Library card number and password.

Other residents of Texas who hold a library card from a library that is part of the TexServe consortium can also access similar subscription databases Online.

Medlineplus.gov takes users to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.  Users can learn about health topics, drugs and supplement, and access videos and “cool tools”.  They can also access information specific to a particular age level or gender,  view senior clinical trials, and consult a medical dictionary.
