Vacation Bible School Bible Olympics

This week emphasizes that Christians witness to others through their actions. It also furnishes ample opportunities for physical exercise centered around Biblical passages while providing inspiration for crafts. As for Missions, the youth could organize a walk for charity.

Walk:  Psalm 23 KJV (memory verse)

23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Craft Activity: The Internet has lots of craft activities illustrating the 23rd Psalm.

Physical Activity: The Youth could organize a charity walk to illustrate this “event”, or they could take the children on a walk around the church’s neighborhood.

 3 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.
6 Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Craft Activity: Children could make a paper jumping jack to give to children in the hospital: http://www.nocread.com/gopdf/jumping-jack-toy-template.pdf

Physical Activity: Jumping to praise music

(Lyrics to a Coptic hymn)
Here comes Jesus rising in glory.
Hosana, Hosana, Hosana to the King.
He's alive, so let's tell the world the story.
Hosana, Hosana, Hosana to the King.
Chorus: Shout Hosana, Hosana! (Sung or said while jumping up and down three times)

Swim: John 21:7 (NIV) (Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish)

7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.
Physical Activity: A day at a local water park with time outs for Bible study.
If scheduling a swimming outing isn't a good idea, someone from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes could talk to the children.

Race: 2 Timothy 4:7-8 NIV (memory verse)

7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Physical Activity: Relay races with teams.

Craft Activity: Make an Award to illustrate that we should be doers of the Word and not hearers only.

Comma & Semicolon Learning Songs

Making Coordination & Subordination Fun!

My eleventh-grade English classes successfully conquered their comma problems after singing these songs every day for several days.
The FANBOYS Song
    (Sung to the tune of “Ten Little Indians”)
For, and, nor, but, or yet, so; For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so;
Putting a comma before the FANBOYS is the way to go
When connecting two complete sentences.

Semicolon Rap

Therefore, however, consequently, nevertheless, accordingly, thus, then:
Join sentences with a semicolon, transition word, and comma at the end.

Subordinate Clause
Comma Song

(Sung to the tune of “Hokey Pokey”)

Put a word that makes a sentence not make sense in;
Then take the period out;
Put a comma in, and you shake things all about.
You connect it to another sentence by putting that comma in.
That’s what it’s all about.

Now flip the sentence!

Now add the  incomplete sentence to the sentence that makes sense.
Then put the since, when, as soon as, once after, because if in,
And take the comma out when you turn the sentence inside out.
That’s what it’s all about.

Wait a minute!

Put an although, though, and even though in,
And put a comma in before the “though family” too.
It  sounds weird, but putting a comma before these words
That’s the exception to the no comma in the middle rule.

That’s what it’s all about.
